On Friday, August 1, Harmonious Chorale Ghana will premiere Makola Queens, a groundbreaking musical that shines a long-overdue spotlight on the women whose tireless efforts helped shape Ghana’s independence movement.
The production will be staged at the National Theatre at 8:00 PM.
Crafted by acclaimed creatives Nii Dromo Yartey and Poetra Asantewaa, Makola Queens tells the powerful and previously untold story of Rebecca Naa Dedei Aryeetey and the legion of market women who played pivotal roles in financing and mobilizing Ghana’s path to freedom.
While history often highlights the male figures who led the charge, this production brings to life the women who carried the weight—strategizing, fundraising, and rallying support at the grassroots.
The musical blends soul-stirring music with compelling storytelling, offering audiences a chance to witness the emotional and political battles of Ghana’s female patriots—women who moved a nation but remain largely absent from its textbooks.
