Ghana’s renowned Harmonious Chorale, alongside celebrated vocalist Kokui Serlomey, delivered a stirring rendition of the African American spiritual “There is a Balm in Gilead” by William Dawson during the second edition of Our Talents Our Thanksgiving.
The event, which fosters corporate worship and thanksgiving, took place in October last year at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) with sound production by PMP.
The spiritual, known for its message of hope in times of despair, captivated the audience with its powerful refrain, which encourages resilience and offers comfort amidst challenges.
Rooted in biblical references, the text of the spiritual reflects on the trials of Israel’s exile in Egypt, as captured in Jeremiah 46:11. Over time, many scholars have reinterpreted this spiritual through a Christological lens, seeing it as a reflection of the healing and redemptive power of Christ.
Our Talents Our Thanksgiving has become a cherished event that gathers people from diverse backgrounds for a moment of reflection, praise, and gratitude, and this soulful performance was no exception in elevating the spirit of the occasion.
